Letter to the editor: Our voice will be heard

On April 17, 2013 the background check amendment died in the Senate when they were unable to come up with the 60 votes needed to break the filibuster. Among those who voted against cloture was our own Iowa senator Chuck Grassley. Considering that nearly 90 percent of Iowans support gun background checks, it is a proven method of preventing gun violence and it does nothing to hurt lawful gun ownership. There is no reason or excuse for why he did not vote for cloture. Grassley is not a senator for the National Rifle Association or the gun lobby; he is a senator for the people of Iowa and we need to remind him of that.
