Eight Cyclones take home team awards at end-of-the-year banquet

Eight Cyclones took home team awards at the ISU hockey team’s banquet on March 30, 2013. Forward Jon Feavel led the team in awards received, earning three.

Feavel won the Jon Robyt Award, which goes to the most outstanding forward, as well as the Alexander Murdoch Award, which goes to the most valuable player.

Feavel shared the Charlie Turner Award, which goes to the team’s leading scorer, with ISU forward J.P. Kascsak, despite Kascsak having one more point this season than Feavel, according to acha.com. Kascsak had 41 points (22 goals, 19 assists) while Feavel had 40 points (25 goals, 15 assists).

ISU defenseman Antti Helanto got the Larry Saal Award, which goes to the most outstanding defenseman. The sophomore from Turku, Finland had 18 points (10 goals, eight assists) this season and appeared in the ACHA All-Star Game.

ISU goalie Matt Cooper started the season as the backup to Paul Karus and Scott Ismond, but finished the season with an appearance in the All-Star Game along with winning the Transamerica Most Improved Player Award. Cooper had a 9-1-1 record this season and only allowed 1.2 goals per game on average.

Despite Cooper’s success in his first year with the Cyclones, ISU defenseman Matt Szpak was given the National Guard Rookie of the Year Award. Szpak appeared in 44 games this season and had 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists) as well as 33 penalty minutes.

ISU forward and alternate captain Mark Huber won the Raymond Vaillant Spirit Award. Huber was third on the team in scoring with 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) in 44 games.

ISU defenseman Alec Wilhelmi won the James Ruso Award, which goes to the player with the highest GPA, for the second year in a row with a 3.92 GPA. He shared the award with ISU defenseman Tony Martirosian.
