PRINT Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset being developed at the moment thanks to a kickstarter a while back. At this point the dev kits for it are out and I was lucky enough to get to try one out for myself. I was excited but also wasn’t sure what to expect.

A lot of different VR headsets have been made over the years and they all ended up either not working well or just not working. My first experience was with Slender: The Awakening. The game itself isn’t “oculus ready” which means that it isn’t made for use with the oculus rift but with a dev kit you can get it running.

It was instantly more immersive than when I looked at the game on a monitor but the resolution wasn’t the best (a mixture of the headset itself and the game not being made for it).

So the game was great but after a while I had to stop playing because my eyes felt strained from trying to look at details in the dark. So next up, I tried a game that is currently oculus ready, Team Fortress 2.

To start with, the game looked a lot better and was even utilizing the 3D effect the headset can give players. Rocket jumping was a blast and I felt like I had an advantage being able to look around myself without moving where my gun was aiming.

From that experience I’m really excited about the Oculus Rift but it’s not for the average consumer yet./ The consumer model is in the works and it’ll not only have a better display resolution but by that time the list of oclulus ready games will be a lot longer.
