The Cyclone men’s golf team improved their first round score of 290 to 285 to move to a tied for eighth place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.

The team was again led by Scott Fernandez, who shot a second round score of 65 to improve to second place individually (69-65=134). The round tied for the lowest round in Cyclone history at an invitational.

The low score helped keep the Cyclones in contention for a top spot with one round remaining in the closely-contested meet thus far. Only 13 strokes separate the top-10 teams in the tournament.

While Fernandez shot a record round, the rest of the team struggled. The Cyclones are currently the highest placed team with only one player in the top-35. The team’s No. 2 golfer, Sam Daley, is currently ranked 42nd with two rounds of 73. The top-11 teams have at least two players in the top-35.

Zach Steffen sits as the Cyclone’s No. 3 golfer (73-75-148), while Collin Foster leapfrogged Blake Waller on the scorecard with a round of 72 to shoot 149.

New Mexico maintained it’s lead (276-286-562), while San Diego shot up the leader-board with a meet-best round of 275 to improve from ninth place to second place in the second round.

Oregon State tied San Diego for second (280-284=564), while California, UNLV and San Diego State all tied for fourth, finishing their second rounds with scores of 566.

Oregon State’s Nick Chianello maintained his first-place individual ranking (64-68-132), followed by Fernandez, with California’s Brandon Hagy (70-65-135) closely trailing in third.

The Cyclones will play their final round Sunday, with Blake Waller teeing off at 7:30 Pacific time.
