The ISU men’s golf team shot a team score of 879 (292-290-297) to finish fifth in a field of 21 teams at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C., over the weekend.

The Cyclone charge was led by Scott Fernandez, who shot 7-under par (69-68-72=209) to share first-place individual honors with Samford’s Drew Aimone. The first-place finish was his fifth top-three finish of the season and second time taking meet medalist honors in his career.

Zach Steffen finished second on the team with a score of 222 (74-72-76), while Sam Daley improved his score each round to finish third on the team (76-75-73=224). Collin Foster filled the final spot on the scorecard (73-79-76=228).

The tournament was dominated by Virginia Tech, whose team score of 843 topped second-place North Florida by 19 strokes. Troy finished third with a score of 873 and Samford shot 877 to place fourth.

Only five strokes separated the fourth- through seventh-place teams.

The fifth-place finish is the third top-five finish of the season for the Cyclones, and the 16 teams they defeated in South Carolina is the most in a tournament this season.

The golf team will have a week off before heading to Tempe, Ariz., to play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on April 5-7.
