ISU women hoping for confidence and consistency
March 8, 2013
After a long three-week break, the No. 28 Iowa State women’s golf team hopes for confidence and consistency on unfamiliar ground.
The Cyclones prepare to face a six-team pool at the Purdue Mount Vintage Invitational in North Augusta, S.C. on March 9. The 54-hole, two-day tournament was added to the schedule after weather conditions caused by Hurricane Sandy canceled tournament play at The Landfall Tradition in North Carolina last October.
The tournament course, Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club, is new territory for the Cyclones. Punpaka Phuntumabamrung, ranked 93rd individually according to Golfstat, said that the unfamiliar ground isn’t anything to worry about.
“We have done as much as we could in practice, especially yardage, which is very helpful,” Phuntumabamrung said. “There is nothing exciting or different from than any other course. I feel ready for it.”
Although the Cyclones maintain consistency, confidence has become seemingly present in tournament play.
The ISU women’s golf team took home fifth place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a three-round score of 896, and tallied 897 for fifth place again at the Central District Invitational.
Phuntumabamrung tallied a 231 at the Central District Invitational and a 225 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in February, scores that do not excite her.
“I struggled with my technique and mentality. When I start to lose, my swing gets worse and my confidence lowers,” Phuntumabamrung said. “It impacts my mentality and I lose confidence.”
With a new tournament on new territory, the Cyclones feel well-practiced and prepared. Phuntumabamrung said that she is excited to put hard practice to good use.
“I want to play better than the last tournament,” Phuntumabamrung said. “I am excited to try out what I was working on and just be out there and do my best.”
The Cyclones will compete against No. 22 Purdue, Georgia Regents University (formerly Augusta), Delaware, IUPUI, and Coastal Carolina.
Tournament play is set to commence at 8 a.m. ET on March 9 in North Augusta, South Carolina.
