Cyclones renew an unbalanced rivalry this weekend

To find a time when the ISU hockey team beat Lindenwood, one would have to go all the way back to Oct. 24 and 25, 2008.

Since then, the Cyclones are 0-13 against the Lions.

No. 14 Iowa State gets one more chance this regular season to end its losing streak against No. 7 Lindenwood Feb. 8 and 9. Last weekend, Robert Morris (Ill.) swept Lindenwood 5-3 on Feb. 1 and 5-2 on Feb. 2.

“I didn’t expect that at all,” ISU coach Al Murdoch said. “I thought Lindenwood would be in the running for the league championship and still [be] maybe. I think it’s a wide-open race through this weekend.”

Right now, the Cyclones are ahead of Lindenwood in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League Standings by seven points despite the two teams having an identical win percentage (.500). The Cyclones have 50 points, and the Lions have 43, while the Cyclones have played 10 more games than the Lions.

The Cyclones played the Lions earlier this season on Nov. 17 and 18, 2012, in Wentzville, Mo., and were swept 5-1 and 3-2.

ISU forward David Kurbatsky hasn’t been on the winning end of a game against Lindenwood in his four years at Iowa State.

“The opportunities to win against them haven’t come for most guys,” Kurbatsky said. “Going to the national tournament my freshman year and losing to them in the championship game created an even bigger rivalry for me just ‘cause they stole. You know; they won the national tournament. You know. So, this weekend series is huge. It’s my last year. So, I’d love to get a win under my belt against this team.”

The Cyclones take on the Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 8 and at 8 p.m. on Feb. 9. Both games are at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena.
