Gamer’s Domain: The PS4 is real
February 27, 2013
Hello gamers! I’ll be briefly giving my opinions on what was revealed last Wednesday at the PlayStation 4 event.
If you have read my past entries, you’ll know I prefer Xbox over PlayStation. I’ll still be completely fair in this and give credit where credit is due, because this was a seriously impressive show.
Okay, all bias aside, I really, really like what I saw from the PS4 event. I enjoy that they increased the controller’s size; they pretty much needed to. I heard they worked on the triggers, but I won’t know how well until I get my hands on one. But the joysticks… they are still in the same place. I don’t think it matters for me that they are now concave. The fact that they are next to each other will PROBABLY make FPS games on the PlayStation once again less-than-desirable when compared to to the Xbox, but it is way too early to tell. I have always thought Xbox nailed the controller layout with the 360 when they created what I believe to be the best controller ever. Since Microsoft is sure to stick with what works, I will too.
The system itself sounds like an absolute beast. Remember how impressive the current gen was when it first came out? Compare those launch titles with what we have today, and they look like they belong on an N64 cartridge. What I’m getting at is that this new system will have impressive launch titles, sure. But from the middle to the end of the PS4’s days is when we will truly see its power. By then, devs will have learned the ropes of the console and experiment with just how far they can push it. Those are the days I’m waiting for.
I haven’t played many PS exclusives, but I was seriously impressed with the game trailers I saw. They all looked awesome, and even though some of them were CGI cut scenes instead of actual gameplay, the concepts still looked neat. I am especially excited to see Bungie’s Destiny, which will be on the next-gen Xbox too.
I love the streaming capabilities and just knew that we’d see them when Sony bought Gaikai last year. I cannot wait to see how the goals they announced actually pan out, as well as future, unannounced plans that we might experience down the road. Much like the consoles today, I bet the 2020 PS4 will look nothing like the 2013 PS4 we will see in a few months.
Speaking of which, I am glad that we didn’t see the console. We need to save some stuff for E3, right? Rest assured, we will see the design there and I’m sure we’ll learn more about what it can do. In the meantime, we’ve been given a boatload of info to digest, and we still have the next Xbox to worry about too. Awesome!
