When the Cyclones match up against the Sooners on Thursday night, they will be looking for a similar game they did almost exactly a month ago, despite the change in venues.

In Ames, Iowa State (17-5, 8-4 Big 12) ousted Oklahoma (18-5, 8-3) by a 21-point margin, led by junior Hallie Christofferson (24 points) and sophomore Nikki Moody (20 points).

Although it wasn’t a factor for the Sooners last time, ISU coach Bill Fennelly said they have something special when it comes to 3-point shooting.

“[Oklahoma] is the most versatile team in our league,” Fennelly said. “They shoot the 3 great, at a high percentage.”

One thing that has made the Sooners so versatile, Fennelly said, was their ability to execute on offense. He said his team isn’t one that picked up the pace in the past.

In the previous game against Oklahoma, Fennelly’s squad got out to a quicker pace than normal, which didn’t sit well with the coach.

“It kind of scared me a little bit, to be honest,” Fennelly said. “We don’t want to play slow, but we have never been able to play at that pace.”

Fennelly said pace could have a big factor when his team travels down to Norman, Okla., on Thursday.

“They play quicker than us. If the pace is the way they want it, they have the advantage in every spot,” Fennelly said. “But if the pace is the way we want it, the advantage is probably not nearly as great.”

Freshman Kidd Blaskowsky also had a large impact on the Cyclones’ win against the Sooners in January. Blaskowsky checked out with 17 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Blaskowsky said the motivation of the winning streak they have going will help bring some atmosphere with them on the road.

“If we can … keep the motivation we have going with this three-game win streak, we’ll go destroy them at their house,” Blaskowsky said.

The three games Blaskowsky talks about are the wins at home against Texas Tech and Kansas State and a road victory against Texas, all by a 16-point or greater margin.

Fennelly said he has hope for where the team could finish by the end of the regular season, but with the Big 12 Conference being so tight, anything could happen.

“We’re still in a position to be anywhere from second to seventh,” Fennelly said. “So now, it’s a matter to see what we can get done.”

Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Network.
