The No. 13 ISU hockey team tried to repeat last year’s road sweep of Illinois on the Big Pond, but came away as losers in both games last weekend.

The Cyclones (15-14-1-2) clawed back from a two-goal deficit on Friday to force overtime and a shootout in Champaign, Ill.

ISU forward Jon Feavel scored first for the Cyclones on a breakaway in the second period. At 17:30 into the third period, ISU defenseman Antti Helanto tied the game at two, scoring after a deflected shot from ISU forward Mark Huber.

Huber scored the only ISU goal in the shootout, which wasn’t enough. UI forward John Scully put the game-winner past ISU goalie Scott Ismond. Ismond stopped 28-of-30 UI shots.

The Cyclones couldn’t get anything going on Saturday and were shut out 5-0 by No. 9 Illinois.

ISU goalie Paul Karus gave up four goals on 14 shots in two periods before being replaced by junior Matt Cooper, who stopped 10-of-11 UI shots in two periods. The Cyclones had 10 penalties in the game. Scully, John Olen and Scott Barrera all had two points for Illinois in Saturday’s game.
