IOWA CITY, Iowa — ISU wrestling (0-2) lost to in-state rival Iowa (6-0) 32-3 on Saturday.

“It is a long season — we’re two matches in and we’re 0-2,” said ISU coach Kevin Jackson. “Obviously we’re not feeling good about it but we wrestle again in a couple of weeks and we’ll keep pushing forward.”

The dual began at 174 pounds, where redshirt freshman Tanner Weatherman took on No. 7 Mike Evans. Weatherman lost in a 10-1 major decision after being ridden for 3:09.

No. 15 redshirt junior Boaz Beard took on No. 7 Ethen Lofthouse at 184 pounds. Lofthouse racked up five points in the third period to win the match 10-3. The win put Iowa up 7-0.

Iowa State’s first and only win came from redshirt sophomore Kyven Gadson at 197 pounds. Gadson held onto his lead despite receiving a stalling warning in the third period to cut his lead to one at 5-4 against Nathan Burak.

At heavyweight, No. 16 Matt Gibson took on No. 5 Bobby Telford. Wearing a wrap on his right hand, Gibson got a reversal in the third period to take the lead 2-1.

Telford, however, had a reversal of his own in the third period to win 3-2.

At 125 pounds, No. 19 Ryak Finch took on the top-ranked wrestler Matt McDonough, a two-time national champion. McDonough won 13-2 to give Iowa its second major decision of the night.

True freshman John Meeks competed in the second dual meet of his collegiate career against No. 3 Tony Ramos at 133 pounds. Meeks lost to Ramos in a 19-7 major decision.

After two periods, No. 18 Luke Goettl remained tied at 0-0 with No. 13 Mark Ballweg at 141 pounds. In the third, Ballweg escaped and got a takedown to make the score 3-0. Goettl escaped to make the final score 3-1.

Sophomore Luke Swalla faced Micheal Kelly at 149 pounds. Kelly won in a major decision 16-6 and put Iowa ahead 25-3.

At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Logan Molina took on No. 1 Derek St. John. St. John won 16-5 to give Iowa its fifth major decision of the meet.

In the final match, redshirt sophomore Mike Moreno lost to No. 20 Nick Moore at 165 pounds. In the third period, Moreno escaped to make it 3-2. Moore held onto his lead to give Iowa a 32-3 win over Iowa State.

After the meet, Jackson said Iowa State could have wrestled better.

“I felt pretty good,” Jackson said. “I think they felt pretty good prior to the match starting but when the lights were on and it was time to wrestle every position and we stopped wrestling.”
