Before 4,396 fans, the fourth-largest crowd in ISU history, No. 18 Iowa State upset No. 3 Texas in five sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 15-13) on Saturday night.

The Cyclones (20-7, 13-3 Big 12) ended the regular season on a 10-match winning streak. Iowa State’s last loss was against Texas (23-4, 15-1) in a five set match in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 17.

“What a memorable and great match for our seniors in particular,” said ISU coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. “I think this is how volleyball should be. It was just back and forth with a lot of great rallies. I thought everyone, actually, played really well on our team.

Middle blocker Jamie Straube had 16 kills in the win with a hitting percentage of .406. Outside hitter Andie Malloy also contributed to the ISU offense with 19 kills and a hitting percentage of .372.

Libero Kristen Hahn continued to be an anchor for the Cyclone defense, averaging six digs per set in the win. Hahn said when Iowa State was at match point and about to seal the win, she was excited and nervous all at the same time.

“I think I blacked out, literally,” Hahn said about match point. “We switched it so I played middle back and [outside hitter Rachel] Hockaday played left-back and it was just like, ‘Please hit it at me, I hope you hit it right at me.’ I think Jamie tipped it to right-back and then [outside hitter Bailey] Webster hit it out.”

The win against Texas is the second top-five team Iowa State has defeated this season after beating No. 1 Nebraska at Hilton Coliseum on Sept. 15. The victory against Texas was also Johnson-Lynch’s 100th Big 12 win.

“I’m really proud of where this team has come from,” Johnson-Lynch said of the team’s turnaround from earlier in the Big 12 season. “My reflection on the team is that they always had faith it was going to come. They always had faith that we would be good.”

The previous Iowa State victory against Texas was a five set win at Hilton Coliseum in 2009.
