Cyclones wrap up fall season at Landfall Tradition
October 25, 2012
The ISU women’s golf team finishes up its fall season Oct. 26 through 28 at the Landfall Tradition hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
Iowa State will be competing with 17 other teams, including Big 12 competitors Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
Arizona is one of the teams Iowa State looks forward to facing off against again this meet.
“I think Arizona is there, and they have been ranked No. 1,” said ISU coach Christie Martens. “We played with them at the Windy City, and so I think that it will be good to see them again and the other great teams.”
Also in attendance will be Purdue, which took first last year at the Landfall Tradition.
Iowa State also competed in this meet in 2011, tying for fifth place in Wilmington. This gives a level of comfort to the many returning players on the team.
“I’m really excited because we have played there before. I think it should give us an advantage from knowing the course,” said Punpaka Phuntumabamrung.
Iowa State is hoping it plays stronger at this meet than it did at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate, where the team placed in its lowest slot of the season in seventh place.
Prima Thammaraks, who was disappointed by how she played at the previous meet, said she feels confident, excited and “ready to go” at the meet this weekend.
“I feel very prepared for it,” Thammaraks said. “I did not hit my long irons well at the last tournament, and the previous tournament as well, but I think I’ve got that figured out for this tournament.”
Phuntumabamrung also feels prepared to be attending this course again and is confident in the team’s abilities.
“We just have to do our best on every shot,” Phuntumabamrung said.
This will be the ISU women’s golf team’s final meet for the fall season until it returns for its spring season on Feb. 3 at the Dual Match in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The team is excited for the competition that awaits them this weekend at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
“It’s a great field so there’s always really good teams there,” Martens said. “It should be a great way to end our fall. I think it should be great competition.“
