Swimming and diving team comes up short in opener

Iowa State drove home from Minnesota tonight with a tough loss, leaving them 0-1. The Cyclones showed promise, competing with one of the top teams in the nation, for a final score of 144-140.

The swimming team started strong, winning the first event of the night. Amanda Paulson captured first place beating the Big Ten swimmer of the week, Minnesota’s Tess Behrens, with a time of 28.83.

The Cyclones also finished second and third in the 100 freestyle. Paulson took second place with a time of 52.97 while Katie Vollhaber finished third for the Cyclones clocking a time of 53.07.

Other notable finishes for Iowa State includes Bre Loeschke, who finished in the 100 backstroke at 58.10 taking second place. Dani Harris also swam well tonight, taking fourth (59.46).

Freshman, Elyse Brouillette battled from the diving well, recording an NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying score of 289.50. With a qualifying score, Brouillette is guaranteed a trip to Houston for the Zone Diving Championships later in March.

Diving from the three-meter boards Jessica Henderson scored 263.85 to secure second. Megan Cohea was not far behind Henderson, putting up a score of 232.43 and taking third.

The team will be back in action at home for a duel meet against South Dakota State on Saturday, Oct. 20.
