Firestone Invitational leaves team disappointed, frustrated
October 9, 2012
The final results of the Firestone Invitational sent the ISU men’s golf team home disappointed. Falling from the leaderboard six places Tuesday left coaching staff frustrated.
“The course wasn’t playing that difficult,” said coach Andrew Tank. “I feel like our guys are unable to put a score on the board that they are capable of.”
The team had been tied for fourth place leaving the first round of the tournament Monday but fell to 10th overall at the end of the second round Tuesday afternoon. Iowa State left Akron, Ohio, carding a total of 593 (290-303), which is 17 strokes over par.
“It’s certainly disappointing to shoot the scores we did,” Tank said. “We had a pretty solid first round [Monday] and we had one of the worst rounds [Tuesday].”
After taking third place in 2011 the team had hoped to put up similar scores this year at Firestone.
“Nobody really played to their potential,” Tank said. “We’re just not doing the little things that good teams do.”
Sam Daley, who was part of last year’s third-place finish, was left disappointed.
“The good score was out there if you played well,” Daley said. “We all kind of struggled is all.”
Daley led the team this week as the Cyclones’ top performer, tying for 12th place.
“The team didn’t play too good [Tuesday],” Daley said. “Individually I guess it’s good to be in the top 16 … but I’m a little disappointed.”
Finishing the tournament with a total of 145 (72-73), Daley attributes the poor performance Tuesday partially on the weather.
Collin Foster can relate to the poor weather, recalling a double-bogied hole due to windy conditions.
“I didn’t feel the direction of the wind,” Foster said. “[It] went right over the pin and kept going.”
Sending the ball behind the green, Foster landed in a patch of mud and struggled to get under the ball. Without much green to work with from his position, he hit the ball placing it into the rough. A poor chip and two putts left him two over par.
Foster finished the tournament as the Cyclones’ second-lowest individual scorecard leaving tied for 22nd with a total of 148 (73-75).
The team was again without top golfer Scott Fernandez this week as he competed in the World Amateur. Representing his home country Spain, Fernandez finished tied for 13th as an individual Sunday afternoon, helping to secure his Spanish team’s tie for ninth.
Iowa State will be back in action Oct. 27, when they will travel to Greensboro, N.C., to compete in the Bridgestone Golf Colligate.
