Movie Review: ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’

Resident Evil: Retribution

Gabriel Stoffa

The “Resident Evil” series is a dirty pleasure of mine. I realize the movies are not very good, but Milla Jovovich is one of my favorite actresses to watch. Not only is she one of the most attractive women on the planet, but I also enjoy her acting. The action and story of the movies are also nerdalicious enough to entertain me.

The newest of the sci-fi action fest is “Resident Evil: Retribution.” And I will say with no joking, it is my favorite of them all.

The world has finally come to its bitter end thanks to the nefarious machinations of the Umbrella Corporation. As usual, Jovovich’s Alice is the key to saving humanity. On a side note, I would really love to see Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich tag up again as the two coolest heroes for the sexes. Not that “The Fifth Element” was absolutely amazing, but it has been 15 years. Maybe for the final “Resident Evil” flick, which I assume is coming based on the ending to the latest one and will be beyond awesome and get Willis to make a cameo and reunite the two. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Anyway, Jovovich brings her usual kung-fu, gun-fu super powers to play with the zombie-like infestations. Joining her comes about every character possible from the previous storylines, including that creepy, childish voiced Red Queen program bent on killing everyone.

What makes “Retribution” my absolute favorite of the bunch is the way the movie was made more into a video game. The action is over the top — not to say it had not already been — and when combined with the dialogue, it made me feel like I was viewing an epic video game preview. The movements and line delivery of every character felt like those short cinematic plot developments that make some RPG video games so attractive.

It was as if they filmed the movie with intentions of making the actors a little more stiff, just to get close to what CGI people look like; think “Beowulf.” All the while, the plot is directed to unfold in that same RPG manner where the characters bounce from one scene to the next. There are scenes where Jovovich actually does the ever-so-classic video game trait of leveling-up her weapons in that far too convenient manner. The nerd in me was giggling with delight.

The bad parts about the movie are hardly worth delving into, as the “Resident Evil” films aren’t meant to be anything more than a good time. If you want substance, this is not the movie for you. But if you are “Resident Evil” fan or a video game trailer fan or if you just want some fun action for an hour and a half, it is worth the watch. However, it doesn’t demand seeing in theaters. Picking it up at the home video or seeing it at the dollar theater would serve just as well. Especially if you plan to have a marathon of the whole series once it comes out for rental, which is exactly what I plan to do.
