The ISU soccer team (5-3) spent its weekend at the Minnesota Gold Classic, where it played DePaul (4-2-1) on Friday and No. 20 San Diego State (7-0) on Sunday in Minneapolis.

“We played pretty well. On Friday, we got the win. We are getting things together,” said Brittany Morgan. “We are going to do good things this year.”

Iowa State started off its weekend with a 2-0 shutout win over DePaul in a foul-ridden game on Friday. The Cyclones racked up 14 fouls in the night.

Jennifer Dominguez scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, with Ashley Johnson giving the assist. Sophomore Hayley Womack gave the Cyclones their second and final goal of the game at 80 minutes.

Goalkeeper Maddie Jobe had eight saves on the night and got her third shutout of the season against DePaul on Friday.

“Maddie Jobe is playing very well,” said ISU coach Wendy Dillinger. “She came up big on Friday to earn the shutout and she came up big today against SDSU. Maddie has only given up one goal this year that was not a breakaway.”

Iowa State played its second game against San Diego State on Sunday, falling 2-1 to the No. 20 ranked Aztecs.

“Until today [San Diego State] had not given up a goal. We are the first team to score on them this year,” Dillinger said. “To hang with the No. 20 team in the country and have opportunities to win the game is outstanding for our team.”

San Diego State was on the board first with a goal by Hannah Keane in the ninth minute. Kaeli Flaska was able to tie the game up for Iowa State with a goal right before halftime in the 42nd minute.

The second half was less eventful, until the end when Megan Jurado won the game with a goal against the Cyclones with less than nine minutes left on the clock.

Iowa State’s loss was a physical one against San Diego State. Three Cyclones were given yellow cards including Jessica Stewart, Lindsay Frank and Megan Longobardi. The Aztecs were also given one yellow card for Marisa Fraticelli.

“Soccer is a contact sport,” Dillinger said. “When you play hard, fouls will happen. Our players play hard. Yellow cards are part of the game.”
