For the eighth consecutive match, No. 18 Iowa State was able to hold off in-state rival Iowa, defeating the Hawkeyes in five sets (25-17, 25-13, 31-33, 19-25, 15-9).

The Cy-Hawk victory was the second win for the Cyclones (5-3, 0-0 Big 12) on Friday after they defeated Eastern Washington earlier in the day in straight sets.

Middle blocker Tenisha Matlock led the way for the Cyclones offensively with a career-high 20 kills on 41 attempts. Matlock also recorded four block assists and two solo blocks.

Outside hitter Rachel Hockaday and libero Kristen Hahn contributed for the Cyclones defensively, each recording 24 digs in the match.

Iowa State led the match 2-0 before Iowa rallied to force a fifth set. In the third set, the Cyclones had six match point opportunities but were unable to close out the Hawkeyes until the fifth set.

The third set was also the longest set since a 2009 loss to Baylor when the Cyclones were swept by the Bears by the same score of 31-33.

The Cyclones will finish the Iowa State Challenge with Syracuse in a match beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
