Fantasy football tips to dominate your league

Jack Shover

Whether you are new to fantasy football or an experienced team owner, every fantasy football season presents new and exciting challenges as you compete against your friends, family or co-workers for fantasy dominance.

If you want to keep an edge on the competition, take note of these four fantasy football tips:

1. Sit on kickers, defenses and quarterbacks in the draft

During your fantasy draft, resist the urge to get an “elite” kicker or defense until the last several rounds. If possible, only draft one kicker and one defense, and instead, use a roster spot to draft a sleeper pick. If you need a kicker or defense come your starter’s bye week, turn to the waiver wire if you need the scoring punch against a tough opponent.

While Patrick Mahomes may be a head above the other quarterbacks in terms of points scored per game, the quarterbacks ranked two through 16 are all within six points of each other in fantasy points scored per game. Wait on drafting a quarterback, and if there is an early run on signal callers early in the draft, use it as an opportunity to draft players at running back and wide receiver.

2. Turn on Twitter notifications during the season

Trades, injuries, benchings and suspensions make for a tumultuous fantasy season, but don’t let the chaos of an NFL season ruin your roster. Use it to your advantage. Get a leg up on the other fantasy owners in your league by turning on Twitter notifications from your most reliable NFL reporter. I was able to scoop up Nick Chubb from the waiver wire after seeing the Cleveland Browns had traded Carlos Hyde, who was the team’s No. 1 back at the time. The move helped carry my team from a bad early part of the season to our league’s championship.

3. Do your draft research

During the draft, do research to get the best roster possible. It’s easy to make draft decisions early in the draft, when big names from big name teams are available, but after a few rounds, names become less familiar and decisions become murky as the draft progresses. This leads to the reaching of tight ends, kickers, defenses and players well out of their prime. All it takes is a simple “fantasy sleepers” Google search to find the recurring names of players who you can get late in the draft to provide solid scoring. Come into the draft with some names in mind of who you would like to take a risk on and players who will be solid backup options.

4. Start a team

While Iowa State intramurals doesn’t offer leagues, starting a fantasy league is simple and can be done with members of your dorm floor or with friends. NFL.com, Yahoo, ESPN and other websites offer fantasy football with customizable scoring, league sizes and playoff formats. Sign up via email or social media and simply invite people to be members of your league on email from the league website.
