This Saturday and Sunday the ISU club baseball team will play a four-game series against Mid-America Conference North team Minnesota State. The first three games of the series will be conference games and the fourth one will be a non-conference game.

The Cyclones were supposed to play a two-game non-conference series on the road against Kansas State on Friday, but those games have been cancelled. ISU coach Aaron Hinnah said they did not get back to them about getting a neutral field in Kansas City, Mo., in time for them to get their trip certified by risk management at the university.

“It’s probably for the best anyways,” Hinnah said. “We’d get back late and have to get up that next morning, so that would really wear down the players that were gone at that.”

Last weekend the Cyclones (5-7, 4-5 Mid-America Conference North) won only one of their three conference games on the road against UNI and lost their non-conference game as well.

Junior Spencer Maroo went 5-9 at the plate and scored eight runs last weekend, and Hinnah said he would be back in the lineup for the conference games, probably as the designated hitter, this weekend against Minnesota State.

“He just did phenomenal,” Hinnah said. “It’s hard to get him into the lineup at his position, but he’s been a great DH for us.”

Maroo is excited to get a chance to show what he can do.

“I feel really comfortable at the plate,” Maroo said. “I’ve been seeing the ball really well and anything I can do to help out the team, hits, whatever he wants me to do, I’m going to do it. Luckily I’ve had some good at bats this year, and I hope to keep that going.”

The Mavericks (6-3, 1-2 Mid-America Conference North) have been off the last two weeks, but in their last set, they defeated Iowa in one conference game by a score of 3-1 and lost the two remaining games by scores of 5-4 and 13-8. They also lost their non-conference game by a score of 10-8. Hinnah is not really sure how the Cyclones match up against the Mavericks.

“From the sounds of it, they’re kind of right at that level with South Dakota and UNI,” Hinnah said. “If we prepare like we can and come out to play we can have a good weekend, but from what I’ve seen this season it all depends on the bats.”

The Cyclones play their four-game series at Cap Timm Field on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday the games begin at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. On Sunday, the games are at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
