Album review: The Lumineers-Self Titled

Lumineers

Gretchen Baer

The newly recognized trio that consists of Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, and Neyla Peckarek is one of the best albums of 2012. Collectively known as The Lumineers, they have created an album that combines front porch folk with sultry ballads, with a touch of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero’s. Schultz and Fraites, originally from the east coast, made the move to Denver, CO where the band was able to really come together when cellist, Neyla Peckarek was added.

The Lumineers’ self titled debut album is sure to put them on the radar. With songs like “Flowers In Your Hair” and “Stubborn Love“, they will capture your heart with the folk ballads that won’t allow you to sit still. “Ho-Hey” is a collaborative song that, I can only imagine, is best heard when sung live. “Submarines” and “Dead Sea” also give a taste of what’s like to hear true folk music with lyrical depth.

The Lumineers’ self titled debut album is one of the best of the year. Their true passion for folk and desire for music shine brightly through this first album. The Lumineers will be playing in Ames at the local M-shop on April 9. Be sure to catch them in a private setting before they are playing large festivals and selling out venues all over the country. You will not be disappointed.
