Softball team falls in day one competition against Texas Tech
March 30, 2012
The ISU softball team lost 19-7 in five innings against Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, in day one of a three game series against its foe.
The Cyclones (10-20, 0-4 Big 12) scored seven runs in the game, a first for the team in five games. But the offensive outburst by Iowa State was met with a bigger offensive output by the Red Raiders (28-7, 1-2), who scored 19 runs of their own.
The game wasn’t scoreless very long as Tech scored in the first inning off a two-out home run to go ahead 2-0 at the end of the first inning.
Iowa State would have the answer though, as the team would score five runs in the second inning off of singles from Sara Davison, Lexi Slater, Tori Torrescano and a fielder’s choice by Amber Ewert.
Torrescano (6-13) began the day in the circle for Iowa State and proceeded to give up three hits and six runs in 1.2 innings of work, while allowing Tech to push ahead 8-5.
Torrescano was replaced in the third inning briefly by Taylor Smith allowing four hits and two runs.
Senior Lauren Kennewell took the circle in place of Smith in the third and finished the remainder of the game for Iowa State.
Kennewell pitched 2.1 innings allowing 11 hits and 11 runs, swelling the Tech lead to become insurmountable that the Cyclones would not recover from.
Iowa State will get another crack at the Red Raiders tomorrow in Lubbock, Texas, for game two of their tripleheader. Action is set to begin at noon.
