4 Cyclones qualify for nationals at Big 12 Championships
March 3, 2012
Four Cyclones secured bids for the NCAA Championships on Saturday with the conclusion of the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo., on Saturday.
Andrew Sorenson (165), Boaz Beard (184) and Matt Gibson (Hwt) all made it to the championship matches of their respective weight classes with Gibson winning a conference title.
Sorenson, the top seed at 165 pounds, lost to third-seeded Zach Toal 3-2, while Beard lost to top-seeded Mike Larson 5-4 at 184 pounds.
Jerome Ward needed one win to secure his fourth straight NCAA tournament bid. Ward, who only wrestled one match due to a severe back injury, lost both his matches to end his season and, likely, his career.
Despite failing to secure an automatic bid in the Big 12 Championships, Luke Goettl (141) and Chris Spangler (174) will likely be awarded at-large bids to the tournament based on their regular season accolades.
Spangler, however, injury-defaulted his third-place match Saturday. His status will be known soon.
Ryak Finch is the fourth automatic qualifier, earning the fourth and final bid allotted to the Big 12 at 125 pounds. Finch lost both of his matches Saturday.
The at-large bids for the NCAA Championships will be announced this week and the tournament will begin March 15 in St. Louis.
