The ISU softball team (9-16, 0-1 Big 12) was defeated by No. 5 Texas (24-2, 3-0) 8-4 in day one of a three-game series.

Junior Tori Torrescano (6-10) pitched well for the Cyclones through the first four innings, giving up three hits and no runs.

Torrescano was even able to get out of a bases-loaded one-out jam as Iowa State was able to get two forceouts to end the inning.

The game was tied at 0-0 going into the bottom of the fourth before Erica Miller blasted a 2 run homerun giving the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.

The lead was quickly squandered though, as Torrescano gave up a two-run home run of her own in the very next inning.

Texas broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run from Karina Scott, giving it a 3-2 lead. Lexy Bennet added a double for the Longhorns as well, pushing the lead to 4-2.

Torescano was replaced in the sixth inning after giving up a total of eight hits and six runs. Senior Lauren Kennewell took the mound and proceeded to surrender four hits and two runs, ballooning the Texas lead to 8-2.

A two-run double by Iowa State’s Anna Cole brought two runs in for the Cyclones pulling them within four. But it was not enough as Amber Ewert struck out to end the game.

Game two of the tripleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Ames.
