Softball team falls to No. 5 Longhorns in game two
March 24, 2012
The ISU softball team was defeated by No. 5 Texas by a score of 7-3 in the second game of a tripleheader in Ames.
The game began at a much quicker pace than the previous day as the Longhorns (25-2, 4-0 Big 12) were able to score four runs in the first inning.
The Cyclones (9-17, 0-2) were able to answer back, however, scoring three runs of their own in the frame.
But three runs proved to be all the Cyclones could muster in the game, as they were unable to score again in the game.
Texas was able to score again in the second inning, pushing their lead to 5-3. Two solo home-runs in the third inning sealed the victory for the Longhorns.
Freshman Miranda Kemp got the start on the mound for Iowa State and pitched two innings, giving up six hits and three runs. Kemp was briefly replaced by Taylor Smith, who pitched .2 innings giving up five hits and four runs.
Madison Jones (1-1) entered the game late in the third inning and finished out the game for the Iowa State. Jones pitched four innings giving up just three hits and no runs.
The Cyclones will get another chance as game three of the tripleheader is scheduled to begin at noon Sunday in Ames.
