Of the three Democratic candidates currently running in their party’s primary for U.S. Senate in 2020, attorney Kimberly Graham is the only one to have never previously run for elected office.

“I never thought in a million years I’d run for office,” Graham said on her campaign website.

While marching in the Capital City Pride Fest parade in Des Moines on Sunday, Graham said she is running because “our nation is in crisis.”

“What I’ve seen from Washington D.C. the last couple of years is the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer and the middle class shrinking,” Graham said on her website.

The Drake University Law School graduate calls for more people from working class backgrounds to be serving in government and is a supporter of “Medicare for All,” according to her website.

A trending policy among Democratic presidential hopefuls is the possibility of canceling — or writing off — student loan debt. Graham told the Daily in an email she supports canceling student loan debt.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), an organization chaired by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., has already endorsed one of Graham’s opponents in the race, Theresa Greenfield.

Presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., has also endorsed Greenfield’s candidacy, as has EMILY’s List, the political action committee dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women.

When asked about the DSCC’s endorsement one of her opponents, Graham sent a statement to the Daily, which in part says:

“I would have been pleased to have received the support of the DSCC, but they did not return my calls, email or meet with me, and that didn’t happen. This is not any candidate’s fault, it’s the fault of the broken system of electing candidates which relies on massive amounts of money most Iowans don’t have and don’t have access to.”

Incumbent Republican Sen. Joni Ernst leads all of her Democratic rivals and a generic Democratic opponent in all publicly available opinion polls.
