Law enforcement plan extra traffic enforcement this week
March 13, 2012
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is organizing additional traffic enforcement this week with the help of about 250 Iowa law enforcement agencies.
The enforcement, which will run March 15-18, is part of the bureaus’s special Traffic Enforcement Program. STEP looks for all traffic violations, not just drunken drivers and seatbelt violations, according to a news release.
The bureau hopes extra enforcement will help change driver behaviors. January and February saw a record 59 traffic fatalities in Iowa, and about a third of those killed were not wearing seatbelts.
Iowa’s sTEP coordinator Randy Hunefeld said in the release that all law enforcement agencies need to be proactive and “constantly continue to educate and enforce traffic laws to change driver behavior.”
March 2011’s sTEP enforcement resulted in 18,284 citations and warnings from 242 participating agencies.
