Album review: Andrew Bird’s ‘Break It Yourself’

Break it Yourself

Gretchen Baer

The musically talented Chicago native has released a masterpiece. Andrew Bird’s dreamy folk-rock album is full of many different instruments, giving his latest album a very whimsical feel. Bird’s music is accompanied by his singing and whistling, which adds a bit of a gypsy feel to his music as well. The 23-year-old singer has been commonly compared to Rufus Wainwright and Thom Yorke, which is always a compliment.

Break It Yourself” is a one-of-a-kind album that could be put on repeat over and over, and I highly doubt anyone would get sick of it. This album provides a little bit of feel-good songs, along with soothing and calming tracks. “Desperation Breeds” and “Danse Caribe” might be good tunes to put you to sleep, while “Give It Away” and “Eyeoneye” might put a little skip in your step. The well thought-out lyrics and multi-instrumetal background provide beautiful music to the ears.

“Break It Yourself” is an album that provides listeners with a little of every music genre. The gypsy feel of “Break It Yourself” is a great way to welcome spring and to get to know Andrew Bird as a new and upcoming artist.
