Stoffa: Santorum stumbled onto a spectacular tactic
February 28, 2012
Rick Santorum might have actually had a good idea; though the end game would be to his disadvantage.
Santorum’s political stances and tactics as he scrambles desperately to curry favor with American voters has been both laughable and frightening, but his newest plan to gain the nomination is excellent.
Here is the run-down of his plan: Santorum is robo-calling Michigan voters urging Democrats to come to the Republican caucus and temporarily switch allegiance so as to vote for Santorum, thereby sending a message to Romney.
This isn’t anything new as this year has rolled along. Ron Paul supporters have been coming out to Republican caucus to change party registrations in every state. At my own Republican caucus, about every third person standing in line was a Democrat or Independent that was changing their registration that evening so as to cast a vote for Paul.
Santorum’s plan is not going to benefit him so much as has the registration alteration done by Paul supporters.
Based on the many Democrats I know, and being from a family of very liberal-minded people, I can say with certainty enough to bet on that Democrats do not like Santorum; they downright loathe him and his uber-socially conservative views.
With that in mind, you would assume that Michigan Democrats would simply ignore Santorum’s request and not bother with the caucus. However, it is really in Democrats’ interest to go out and vote for Santorum.
You see, if Santorum wins the nomination to battle for the presidency against Barrack Obama, Santorum will lose. All of those wonderful Independents and socially-liberal Republicans will see Santorum on the ballot, and then write in Paul, not vote or just vote Obama.
If Democrats go to the caucus to cast votes as Republicans-for-the-evening, they will be sending a strong message that the only Republican that has a chance to take down Obama is Romney, as it has been from the get-go.
By assisting Santorum to win the nomination, Democrats are actually helping ensure Obama’s success in a marvelously Machiavellian maneuver.
Personally, I want a real fight for the presidency, so I hope Democrats ignore Santorum and let the Romney/Obama main event occur.
But seeing Santorum defend his robo-calling, all the while without Santorum realizing he is just helping ensure Republicans do not win come the election, is just too comical to let lie.
Politics is one of the greatest arenas to test one’s tactical adeptness, and what Sanorum has shown, is that he only sees short term gain — thereby making him a poor presidential candidate — or that he is completely oblivious to tactics — which again makes him a poor presidential candidate.
At least all of this hoopla has given stand-up comedians plenty of fuel.
