Warner will now turn attention to 2012 outdoor track season
February 27, 2012
ISU sprinter Ian Warner did not leave the Big 12 Indoor Championship with a title after finishing third in the 60 meter dash final in a time of 6.73 seconds while finishing seventh in the 200 meter dash final (21.55).
Warner said that the performance though was not a disappointment, and he “knows next year [he] will get [a Big 12 title] and will be happy to get it.”
Sprints coach Nate Wiens said that he was proud of the way Warner trained and competed in College Station.
“It was an excellent process,” Wiens said. “[He] needs to hold his drive phase a little bit longer. The 60 [meter dash] is a little unforgiving, one little shift and you are going to be off by just a little bit. However, I am very pleased with how he did.”
Warner ran a total of five races at the meet because of the three events he was in plus making the finals in the 60 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Warner was projected to get third place and did so. Warner said he felt he ran the race well.
“I felt like I ran a good race and competed as hard as I could,” Warner said. “Last year I didn’t make the finals, so it was great to not have to just sit and watch the races on the second day.”
The indoor track and field season for Warner has come to an end as he will not compete in the NCAA Championship for indoor, but he and Wiens have agreed the goal is to shine in the outdoor season and become an All-American and qualify for the outdoor NCAA Championships.
Wiens said Warner could have qualified for the indoor NCAA Championships at the upcoming qualifier meet, but the plan that was set all along was to see if he could qualify in the regular season and if not, go ahead and prepare for the outdoor season.
Warner will focus his training over the next several weeks on getting his strength built up so that when outdoor season arrives, he will be prepared to make an effort at gaining All-American status.
“I missed it by .05 [seconds] last year,” Warner said about being an All-American. “I know I can make it this year.”
