First home sweep for Cyclones

The ISU hockey team played at home for the first time of 2012 and came away from the games with two wins against No. 22 Kent State.

The No. 7 Cyclones (21-5-1-4) took the first game on Friday night against the Golden Flashes by a score of 6-1 and followed it up with a 7-1 win on Saturday night, a night when the Cyclones honored the family of former teammate Marcus Andary.

In both games, sophomore, forward Jon Feavel scored the first goal of the game. On Friday it came just one minute and 20 seconds into the game, and the Cyclones never looked back from there.

“I think we kind of came out so hard we kind of got them back on their heels and we just controlled the game from there,” said ISU goaltender Paul Karus.

The Golden Flashes’ Justin Phenney was credited for a third-period goal that went in off the stick of the Cyclones’ forward Joe Bueltel.

“It was just in the crease, I think he hurried it too much to clear it out of the area and he cleared it into our own net,” said ISU coach Al Murdoch. “That happens sometimes.”

That was the only goal that Karus allowed. Karus was willing to laugh about it after the game.

“It was off the third rebound and it was bouncing around, I saw it just shoot to the middle and then I saw somebody’s stick just hammer it home,” Karus said. “I’m still happy, our team won.”

Forward Brian Rooney continued his hot streak on Friday night with a goal and an assist in the victory and defenseman Brody Toigo continued good play both nights with two assists in each game over the weekend.

In their victory on Saturday night, Cyclones’ forward David Kurbatsky recorded a hat trick, scoring three of the team’s seven goals on the night.

After the victory the Cyclones are currently in first place in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League, just ahead of No. 5 Ohio, according to achahockey.org.

Moving forward, the Cyclones will play a pair of games next Friday and Saturday night at No. 10 Illinois.
