The Men and Women’s Track and Field teams will be competing in Austin, Texas for the 2019 NCAA Championships Wednesday. Both teams have multiple athletes which qualified for the championships at the NCAA West Preliminaries which took place from May 23-25.

Women

The Cyclones will have three women competing in the NCAA Championships, in Erinn Stenman-Fahey, junior Amanda Vestri and sophomore Keira Christie-Galloway.

Stenman-Fahey will be competing in the 800-meter run after finishing 16th at the West Preliminaries with a time of 2:05.27 minutes. Texas A&M’s Jazmine Fray finished first with a time of 2:02.27.

In the 10,000-meter run, Vestri qualified with a 12th place finish and 33:55.37-minute time, while New Mexico’s Weini Kelati finished first with a time of 33:15.21.

Christie-Galloway qualified in the 100-meter hurdles with an eighth-place finish and 13.18 second time. Chanel Brissett from USC finished in first place with a time of 12.69.

Men

Nine athletes qualified for the Championships from the men’s team for the Hammer Throw, 4×400-meter relay, 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run and 400-meter hurdles.

Vlad Pavlenko threw for 212 feet and 1 inch to finish in 10th place and Kansas’ Gleb Dudarev finished in first place after throwing for 243 feet and five inches.

Iowa State’s 4×400 relay team which consists of sophomore Charlie Johnson, senior Roshon Roomes, senior Ben Kelly and senior Eric Fogltanz finished 12th after finishing their race in 3:07.01 minutes. Texas A&M’s team finished first with a time of 3:03.05. Roomes and Fogltanz were on the squad that competed the championships last year, but missed the opportunity to qualify for their event’s final by .004 seconds.

Overall, they finished 14th with a time of 3:06.52.

With an eighth-place finish with a time of 50.39 seconds, Fogltanz qualified for the 400-meter hurdles. Cameron Samuel from USC finished first with a time of 49.28. Fogltanz finished 14th at the NCAA Championships last year with a time of 51.89.

The Cyclones had two runners qualify for the 800-meter run with Roomes, who finished fifth at the preliminaries, and senior Festus Lagat, who finished fourth. Roomes finished the race in 1:46.88 minutes and Lagat finished the race in 1:46.58. Kansas’ Bryce Hoppel was the first-place runner with a time of 1:46.09.

Senior Edwin Kurgat finished the 5,000-meter run 19th overall and finished the race in 14:07.83 minutes, with Stanford’s Grant Fisher finishing first with a time of 13:45.64. Last year, Kurgat finished the NCAA Championships as a First Team All-American after finishing seventh in the nation with a time of 13:58.01.

The championships begin on Wednesday and end on Saturday. The event will be aired on ESPN’s channels.
