City Council Moves for Approvals

The Ames City Council met Tuesday at 7 p.m. to discuss and vote on issues surrounding multiple topics concerning the Ames community.

The three main topics focused on during the meeting were redevelopment of the North Grand Mall, awarding a contract for ultraviolet disinfection equipment for the Water Pollution Control Facility and a bid for the National Centers for Animal Health pump station and wastewater metering facilities improvement.

The council began the meeting by approving redevelopment for the North Grand Mall after a lengthy discussion of proposed plans and speaking with a GK Development spokesman for the project.

The meeting continued on to approve final plans and award a $371,800 contract to Trojan Technologies of London, Ontario, Canada, a company that creates products that use ultraviolet light for water treatment solutions.

The contract will be for ultraviolet disinfection equipment that will be used by the Water Pollution Control Facility. The resolution was approved with no discussion.

The last hearing on the council’s agenda was in concern of the National Centers for Animal Health. The resolution was for a pump station and wastewater metering facilities improvement. The resolution was approved with no discussion.

Ward one representative Tom Wacha brought up the issue of complaints from citizens for “more frequency” of CyRides to stop in areas such as The Grove, where there is higher use. This discussion came from a request for a land use policy plan map change for property at 516 South 17th St.

The council decided to take no action on the request for the land use policy plan map change at this time.

During the public works portion of the agenda, FEMA and local funding were discussed for several unspecified projects.

“We’ve spent a lot of time on this with not much in return from FEMA,” said Matthew Goodman, an at-large representative of the council. The resolution for FEMA HMGP local match funding for the projects was approved.
