Beginning of

December celebrates national anniversary for new Iowa State

fraternity

Lambda Theta Phi Latin fraternity, celebrated

its 36 year anniversary on December 1.

The fraternity brothers held an event this

year to celebrate the finding of the fraternity. “We invited the

Iowa State community to come and celebrate…there were refreshments

and cake for people who attended,” said Roberto Orozco, president

of the Iowa State chapter of the fraternity.

“At the end of the event we, the brothers of

Lambda Theta Phi, saluted. Saluting is best described as poetry in

motion. We express our struggles and strengths through saluting

which is important in our Latino culture and what the fraternity

stands for.” He Said

The Fraternity was originally found on Dec. 1,

1975 in Kean College in Union, New Jersey. Since then, it has

expanded to many other universities.

The Iowa State chapter celebrates Latin

culture and “promotes the spirit of brotherhood” between its

members on campus. The fraternity also promotes the education of

Latino students through funding for scholarships, programs and

seminars.

Members of the fraternity helped organize

events on campus in the past such as the Noche Mexicana, also known

as Mexican Culture Night, last year; which was a great turnout

according to the event organizers. It was described to be a much

bigger turnout than in the previous years. “[There were] at least

four to five times [more people than] than last year” Said senior

Eva Morales.

The Iowa State chapter of Lambda Theta Phi was

established this fall by 5 founding brothers and is considered the

first Latino fraternity on the Iowa State campus.

Fraternity president Roberto Orozco was also

the event coordinator for The Noche Mexicana. Orozco was also

involved in presentations of Mexican culture in Global Gala in

2010.

Orozco spoke about how being part of the

fraternity has given him the chance to grow and develop leadership

skills.

“Being a brother of Lambda Theta Phi Latin

Fraternity, Inc. has given me the opportunity to be part of a

brotherhood that can only be described by experience. It has given

us the opportunity to develop our leadership skills and build a

network for life.” He Said.
