Sears, Kmart announce partial list of closings, no locations in Central Iowa
December 29, 2011
Sears Holdings, the parent company of Sears and Kmart, announced a partial list of the stores in plans to close.
The nation’s fourth largest retailers announced plans on Tuesday to close between 100 and 120 stores based on poor holiday sales.
A list of 79 stores was released Thursday afternoon and did not include any locations in Central Iowa. The list states additional stores may be announced later.
Two Kmart stores in Iowa are on the list. A store at 3616 W. Kimberly Road in Davenport and a store at 2727 16th Ave SW in Cedar Rapids will close. Both cities have a second Kmart store, which are expected to remain open.
No Sears stores in Iowa were on the list.
Sears said in a statement that it could not provide an estimate of the job losses coming as a result of these closures because employment “varies by store and format.” The dates on which the stores will close have yet to be announced.
It is also unknown if employees will be offered positions are other stores within the company.
