Iowa State suffered its seventh straight loss to rival Iowa 27-9 on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones (0-6, 0-2 Big 12) were quieted in the first five matches — all losses — before senior Andrew Sorenson notched the first victory of the day against the No. 1 Hawkeyes (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) with a 4-3 decision against Mike Evans at 165 pounds.

Top-ranked Matt McDonough held the Cyclones’ Ryak Finch without an offensive attack for the second straight dual in a 6-0 decision to kick off the meet in the 125-pound match. Finch is now 8-2 on the season and 4-2 in dual action.

True freshman Shayden Terukina started with an early surprise takedown of No. 2 Tony Ramos in the 133-pound match. A back-and-forth between the two resulted in bad positioning for Terukina, which led to the eventual takedown and pin from Ramos, who took advantage of the awkward positioning, in the second period.

Joey Cozart lost a 3-1 sudden victory decision against unranked Mark Ballweg in a match of gridlock and unconnected attacks. Cozart has lost three straight since his dual victory against Old Dominion on Nov. 20.

At 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Michael Moreno got caught on his back while trying grab to Derek St. John’s legs in a scramble, proceeding to get pinned at the 4:38 mark in the match. Moreno drops to 0-4 on the season with his loss to second-ranked St. John.

Chris Spangler won the 174-pound match — an 8-5 decision against No. 6 Ethen Lofthouse — with consistency in getting takedowns for the victory.

Controversy struck as Boaz Beard failed to escape within the last 12 seconds of the third period against the Hawkeyes’ Vinnie Wagner, which would have diminished his riding time to send it to overtime.

However, Beard was found to have 1:00.02 of riding time, giving him the 10-9 victory at 184 pounds.

Tomas Lira, wrestling for a concussed Grant Gambrall, nearly got the Cyclones’ Cole Shafer pinned early in the first period of the 197-pound match. He instead settled for a three-point nearfall.

Shafer later got Lira taken down and nearly pinned, but settled for a three-point nearfall as well before the first period ended in a 6-6 tie.

However, Shafer would not escape from this one, with Lira winning in a 10-6 decision with a string of scoring in the final two periods.

The Cyclones travel to Minneapolis to face Minnesota on Friday.
