Former Iowa State wrestler Kyven Gadson and former University of Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman failed to qualify for the 2019 U.S.A. World Team at the Final X event Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.

Gadson competed at 97 kilograms and Gilman competed at 57 kilograms, with every matchup at Final X being a best-of-three series.

In the 97-kilogram match, Gadson faced Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion Kyle Snyder.

In his senior season at Iowa State, Gadson captured the National Title when he pinned Snyder in the championship match.

Since then, Gadson hasn’t been able to get the best of Snyder, who has represented the U.S. the last four years at 97 kilograms at the international level.

At Final X, Gadson lost the first match 4-0 and the second 12-1.

Snyder has only lost one match on the Olympic or world level. The loss came at the hands of Russia’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev in the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Sadulaev is a three-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist.

Sadulaev moved up a weight class the previous year at the World Championships and lost in the final to Snyder.

With Snyder’s win, he will be able to have the opportunity to face Sadulaev for the third time and again capture a World Championship at 97 kilograms.

Gilman, who was a silver medalist at the 2017 World Championships, fell to Daton Fix in the 57-kilogram matchup. Fix is a redshirt sophomore from Oklahoma State.

Fix won the first match against Gilman 9-1, but Gilman evened up the series with a 3-2 win in the second match.

Fix then clinched his spot with a 6-3 win to edge out the incumbent Gilman for the U.S.’s 57 kilogram spot.

Moving forward for Gadson and Gilman, both athletes will serve as the No. 2 wrestlers at their weights for the U.S. and will only wrestle if either Snyder or Fix gets injured before the 2019 World Championships which will be held in Kazakhstan.
