For his work in community service and his display of good character, former Iowa State running back David Montgomery was named the 2019 Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year on Tuesday.

Montgomery is just the second Iowa State male athlete to win the award behind Cael Sanderson, who won the award in 2002.

At Iowa State, Montgomery was a two-time All-American and was also named a team captain for the 2018 season.

“He will be undoubtedly be remembered as one of the all-time greats to wear the cardinal and gold, but his legacy will extend far beyond the field,” Coach Matt Campbell said. “He truly led the culture change within our walls.”

Montgomery was also a participant in the Big 12 Champions for Life, which is a program featuring players across all sports and schools from the Big 12 to share “life-changing” stories about the benefits of scholarships. Players selected display qualities of leadership, perseverance, community service and discipline.

Montgomery was also named a finalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year award, which is given to a football player who has shown outstanding leadership, character and commitment to the community.

To serve the community, Montgomery helped organize a tornado cleanup in Marshalltown with his teammates and the coaching staff during the summer of 2018. He was also involved with visits to children’s hospitals and elementary reading programs.

Montgomery declared for the NFL Draft as a junior after the 2018 season and was selected by the Chicago Bears with the 73rd pick in the third round of the draft.
