ISU wrestling adds six wrestlers for 2012
November 9, 2011
With six signees in his recruiting class for 2012, ISU wrestling coach Kevin Jackson is excited about the continued development of his program.
The wrestling team announced Wednesday the addition of six wrestlers. Four of the six signees are from the state of Iowa including Gabe Moreno of Urbandale, Dakota Bauer of Iowa City, and John Meeks and Kyle Larson of Des Moines. The other two signees are Destin McCauley of Apple Valley, Minn., and Jesse Doyle of Trinity, N.C.
With the addition of Moreno, whose brother Michael wrestles for Iowa State, the Cyclones will add a three-time state place winner and depth.
“He’s going to meet some needs for us,” Jackson said of Moreno. “He’s going to be a 149-pounder with the possibility of moving up to 157, which are weight classes that we need to add depth in.”
Another Iowa product, Meeks, has gone 123-0 at Des Moines Roosevelt in his first three seasons. Meeks will join the team as a 133-pounder, and Jackson said his recruitment is a good sign for the program.
“John Meeks was well sought after, recruited heavily, and again is one of the best wrestlers in the country,” Jackson said. “[His signing] is showing our fans and our program the direction that we’re going in — and that’s continuing to add nationally ranked kids.”
Three other recruits — Doyle, Larson and Bauer — will add further depth, Jackson said, adding that Doyle will complement 184-pounder Boaz Beard and Larson will help add competition behind 125-pounder Ryak Finch.
Jackson’s final recruit is the highly touted McCauley. Previously a commit to Wisconsin, McCauley was once ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2011. Jackson said McCauley could have an immediate impact and feels his signing helps push the ISU wrestling program forward.
“He’s ready to step right in and perform at the very highest level,” Jackson said. “For us to actually capture an athlete like Destin shows that our program is moving in the right direction.”
