U.S. Women’s National Team downs Chile as Lloyd notches two goals
June 16, 2019
With a 3-0 win over Chile, the U.S. Women’s National Team extended their international win streak to eight and their 2019 World Cup win streak to two on Sunday.
The U.S. clinched a spot in the knockout round prior to their final Group F match against Sweden.
Carli Lloyd opened up the scoring for Team U.S.A. in the first half at the 10-minute mark. Then to take a 2-0 lead, midfielder Julie Ertz scored a header off a corner kick in the 25th minute. The third and final goal for the Americans was in the 34th minute off of a Lloyd header.
Against Thailand, Lloyd scored a goal in the 13-0 rout after coming off of the bench, but against Chile, Lloyd earned the start as Rose Lavelle, Morgan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan all rested.
In the U.S.’s first game, Lavelle had two goals, Rapinoe had one goal and Morgan had five goals against Thailand.
The U.S. had control of the ball for 67% of the match and Chile failed to have a single shot attempt.
Around the 22nd minute, Chile had a fluke through-ball find the back of the net past U.S. goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher off of a penalty kick, but a Chilean player making a run on the goal was called offsides.
The goal differential would have been higher had Chilean team captain and goalkeeper Christiane Endler failed to make six saves against U.S. shots and headers.
Endler is one of the top goalkeepers in the world and is the starter for Paris-Saint Germain at the professional level.
Looking at group play, the U.S. ranks first in Group F with six points and a plus-16 goal differential. Sweden ranks second in the group with six points and a plus-six goal differential after beating Thailand 5-1 Sunday.
Chile and Thailand both have zero points, but Chile comes in the group at third with a negative-five goal differential to the Thailand’s negative-seventeen goal differential.
Sweden had five different players score goals, and the Swedes were able to clinch a trip to the knockout round with the win.
Sweden and the U.S. will play against each other in their final Group F game at 2 p.m. Thursday. The game will be aired on FOX.
Entering the matchup, the U.S. is the No. 1 team in FIFA’s international team rankings and Sweden comes in at ninth.
To finish atop of Group F, the U.S., which leads the World Cup in total goals scored, will need to win or draw versus Sweden
