Cyclones drop dual against Old Dominion

New additions to the lineup weren’t enough for the ISU wrestling team as it lost its third consecutive dual Sunday.

The No. 18 Cyclones’ (0-3) key additions couldn’t push them to victory as they lost 21-16 to Old Dominion (4-1) in Norfolk, Va.

Three ISU wrestlers remained undefeated with victories including Ryak Finch (125), Andrew Sorenson (165) and Boaz Beard (184). The Cyclones received two other victories on the day from Joey Cozart (149) and Matt Gibson (285).

Gibson, who wrestled for the first time officially after missing the first two duals of the season due to disciplinary action, won with a 13-1 major decision over the Monarch’s Matt Tourdot.

Another new addition for the Cyclones was Chris Spangler at 174 pounds.

Ranked No. 7, Spangler made his season debut against the Monarchs’ No. 10 Te Edwards. With an escape with just under one minute remaining, Spangler tied the score 4-4. Edwards would take the match 5-4 after being awarded one point for riding time.

The Cyclones will return to the mat on Friday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames as they begin Big 12 action against No. 4 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m.
