Cyclones swept for first time this season
November 21, 2011
For the first time this season, the Cyclone hockey team dropped two consecutive games, losing 4-1 Nov. 18 and 3-2 the next night to Ohio University.
The Cyclones (14-3-1-2) found themselves down three goals before Derek Kohles put them on the board late in the second period. Goalie Paul Karus had a rough outing, stopping 35 of 39 shots from the Bobcats (14-4-0).
Karus was replaced by freshman Peter Alexander in the series finale. After allowing a second-period goal, Iowa State roared back with two goals early in the third period to take its first lead of the series.
But with five minutes remaining, Alexander let one slip by, tying the game. In overtime, Alexander suffered a hit to the head, forcing him out of the game.
Coach Al Murdoch went with his third goalie, freshman Jared Anderson, who stopped all five shots he saw in the extra period.
In the shootout, Jake Rombach netted the only goal for the Cyclones as they lost 2-1 in the shootout and a 3-2 loss in the game.
The Cyclones are now 1-3 in games decided beyond regulation time.
Iowa State now travels to Michigan to play in the Michigan-Dearborn Holiday Classic from Nov. 25-27.
