Faculty Senate to discuss School of Education proposal
October 10, 2011
The Iowa State University Faculty Senate will hold its second meeting of the 2011-2012 academic year Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of Memorial Union.
In terms of old business, the senate will be “concluding things that have been in tthe process for a while,” said Faculty Senate President Steven Freeman.
There are two topics currently on the docket that members will be voting on. One of these topics is the final proposal for a possible “School of Education” here at Iowa State.
According to the posted proposal, this school will contain the departments of curriculum and instruction, and Educational Leadership and Policy Studies graduate program. Their associated centers, particularly the University Teacher Education program, will also be heavily involved in this proposed school.
“The School of Education will bring the strengths from both departments into a cohesive unit,” Freeman said.
The other topic being voted on will be the proposed name change to the department of apparel, educational studies and hospitality management. This department within the College of Human Sciences would like to change AESHM to the more favorable “department of apparel, events and hospitality management.” According to the proposal, the name change reflects the loss of the educational studies focus and the gain of the events management major introduced this past January.
The Faculty Senate will also be presented with three new proposals to be voted on at the next meeting on Nov. 8. These topics include the discontinuation of the undergraduate major in insect science, the introduction of a new undergraduate major in athletic training, and the establishment of a new Morrill professorship title.
The title should be of interest to students and faculty alike.
“The Morrill professorship will really bring more recognition and added value to the classroom environment,” Freeman said.
