Updated: Police investigating shooting in Ames

An attempt to stop a stolen vehicle ended with three damaged police vehicles and an officer firing his gun Saturday night.
While on routine patrol around 10 p.m. Saturday the Ames Police Department located a black 2011 Toyota Sequoia that had been reported stolen Friday, according to a news release. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled the scene.
According to the news release, the driver of the vehicle has been identified as Amanda Bergeson, 27. Crystal Messer, 29, was the passenger of the vehicle.
Three police vehicles were damaged during the pursuit, but the extent of the damage is not known at this time. The vehicle attempted to strike officer Patrick O’Bryan, a three year veteran of the Ames Police Department, who was outside of his vehicle. O’Bryan responded by firing his duty weapon at the vehicle.
The release said the vehicle then left the Department of Transportation Complex near Grand Avenue and South Fourth Street. It was later stopped at Eighth Street and Grand Avenue.
After the vehicle was stopped, Bergeson was placed into custody and Messer was taken to a hospital in Des Moines to be treated for non-life threatening injuries, the news release said.
Bergeson has been charged with theft in the third degree, a Class C felony; six counts of assault on a peace officer, each count a Class D felony; eluding, a serious misdemeanor and criminal mischief first degree, a Class C felony. She was taken to the Story County Jail.
“Both Bergeson and Messer could face additional charges pending consultation with the Story County Attorney’s office,” the news release said.
According to the release, O’Bryan has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outome of the investigation, as is required by Ames Police Department policy.
The investigation is being conducted by the Ames Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa State Patrol.
