Cyclones beat Huskies, start 3-0 for first time since 2005
September 16, 2011
Luckily for Cyclone fans, big plays came naturally for Darius Reynolds.
The senior receiver hauled in four catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Iowa State’s 24-20 victory over Connecticut in East Hartford, Conn., on Friday night.
Reynolds caught his first on the night from a fellow wide receiver. On a trick play, Josh Lenz tossed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Reynolds, who was wide open on the play. The second score came after a hurdle of two defenders and a run for 20 yards into the endzone.
It was Reynolds’ first 100-yard game of his collegiate career.
Jantz gritted his teeth through the first half of the game, going 0-for-4 in completions and throwing three interceptions to start the first quarter alone. The junior quarterback rebounded, however, finishing with 18-for-29 pass completions and one touchdown and three interceptions.
The Cyclones (3-0) were held to only 101 yards rushing by the Huskies (1-2), who had more first downs and time of possession than their visitors.
Running back James White notched his third rushing touchdown of the season, reaching pay dirt from 26 yards out for the Cyclones’ first touchdown of the game with 11:03 to play in the second quarter.
White finished with 44 yards on 14 carries on the night.
UConn quarterback Johnny McEntee led the Huskies in passing, going 13-for-30 for 188 yards and one interception — his fourth of the season. Freshman quarterback Scott McCummings rushed and passed for the Huskies’ only touchdowns of the night.
ISU linebacker Jake Knott led the Cyclones in total tackles with 11, while cornerback Jeremy Reeves finished with 10. Linebacker A.J. Klein and defensive end Patrick Neal each had eight total tackles each for the Cyclones on defense as well.
The Cyclones are 3-0 for the first time since 2005 and are now 2-2-1 against the Big East with their first victory against UConn in program history.
