Junior middle back Jamie Straube talked earlier in the week about how the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry had grown on her. During the most recent matchup between the two teams, she showed everyone just how much it meant to her.

Straube recorded 10 kills and 13 total points against Iowa en route to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16,25-17)victory over the Hawkeyes. The sweep marked the fourth time in five seasons that the Cyclones (6-0) disposed of the Hawkeyes in straight sets.

“It feels great,” Straube said. “We had a great crowd here tonight. It was a good win for us. It’s a good win for the program. Iowa played great too, but it’s always good to come out on top.”

She was flanked by senior outside hitter Carly Jenson and sophomore middle back Tenisha Matlock. Jenson and Matlock added eight and nine kills of their own.

Matlock is transitioning from the right side to the middleback position and is learning quickly.

“Tenisha is doing great,” Straube said. “She works so hard. It’s definitely hard because she hasn’t played (that position) and there is a lot to learn. She handles it really well.”

Physical play was a big part of the Cyclone’s victory and has been so far this season. That has been a staple of Chritsty Johnson-Lynch-coached teams.

“We’re a really physical team this year,” Matlock said. “That is going to get us a long way.”

Coming away with three more victories, Johnson-Lynch feels that the team improved from game to game.

“Today we didn’t give up any runs,” Johnson-Lynch said. “We had one run where we struggled passing a little bit, but other than that, they didn’t score more than two points at a time.”
