Interim Cy-Hawk trophy to be announced later this week

The players of either Iowa or Iowa State’s football teams will hoist a trophy in the air Saturday afternoon following the annual Cy-Hawk rivalry game. What that trophy will look like is still yet to be determined.

On Aug. 19, both universities, along with the Iowa Corn Growers Association — now the chief sponsor of the Cy-Hawk series — revealed a trophy depicting a four-member farm family. After four days of outcry from fans across the state, Iowa Corn and the universities announced they would listen to the fans and allow them to vote on a new trophy for the 2012 game. In place of the now defunct farm-family trophy, an interim trophy will be on the sidelines for Saturday’s game at Jack Trice Stadium.

Mindy Williamson, director of communications and public relations for Iowa Corn, confirmed Tuesday an announcement on an interim trophy that will be used only for Saturday’s football game will be made either Thursday or Friday.

ISU coach Paul Rhoads was asked Monday about the significance of the trophy for the annual in-state showdown.

“I’d just like to take it home with me, that’s all,” Rhoads said.

Beginning Sept. 3, Iowa Corn started asking for fans’ opinions on what the future Cy-Hawk football trophy should look like. For more information on how to send in trophy ideas and questions, head to www.cyhawkseries.com.
