Beyer Hall pool reopens following closure
September 7, 2011
The Beyer Hall pool has been reopened for use nearly two weeks after it was closed due to a break in the main circuit.
On Aug. 18, Recreation Services posted a notice on the entrance to the pool announcing an indefinite closure after the main circulation pump stopped working. It has been determined that the pump, which circulates water and chlorine through the pool, had simply run its course.
“We had one of our filtration pumps break,” said Michael Giles, director of Recreation Services. “We believe it was an original pump to the building, so it was fairly old — it had run its lifespan.”
Shortly after the issue with the pool at Beyer Hall arose, Rec Services encountered a problem with the pool at the Forker Building. Giles said that pump also broke, but both pools have since been fixed and are currently open for use.
“Forker [pool] is back up and running as well,” Giles said. “It was the same problem: A pool pump broke down, and we don’t just have them sitting on a shelf waiting for them to break, so they have to be ordered and shipped in and refurbished back into the system.”
The downtime for the pools created some hassles for not only Rec Services but also for the ISU swimming and diving team, which relies on the pool at Beyer Hall to practice.
“It’s the main and primary pool on campus,” Giles said. “The Beyer Hall pool is used not only by Recreation Services for programmed activities and recreational swimming; it’s also used by intercollegiate athletics and the swim team, so it had a major effect being down for a week and a half.”
The ISU swimming and diving team, which will host its first meet in Ames on Sept. 30, was fortunate to receive help from the city.
“We were lucky enough to have use of the Furman Aquatic Center that the city of Ames runs,” said Duane Sorenson, ISU swimming and diving coach. “The city was very accommodating to our needs and was able to take care of us.”
With the pumps replaced, swimming hours have returned to normal and the swim team, along with recreational swimmers, have returned to the pools.
