- Aims to reduce taxes and limit the size and scope of government
- Was in a bipartisan band, The Second Amendments, which he formed with other representatives
- States on his website, “The core of our inheritance from our Founding Fathers is that our liberty is from God, not the government.”
Although McCotter has received minimal media attention, according to The Iowa Republican, he was the second-highest bidder for his space at the Straw Poll, purchasing his lot for $18,000.
