A gas leak has been reported on the corner of Welch Avenue and Hunt Street. The Ames Fire Department has evacuated Golden Wok and Stomping Grounds. 

The gas leak was reported around 2 p.m., Lt. Lynn Rahfeldt of the Ames Fire Department said. He said Alliant Energy reported the leak to the Ames Fire Department. 

Rahfeldt said that the extent of the leak will remain unknown until the concrete is broken and the gas main is examined. 

The Alliant Energy crew dug two holes into the concrete to examine the gas main. A supervisor on site said that the gas leak was due to an old fitting that needed to be replaced.

The crew stopped working around 5:30 p.m. Friday. The supervisor said that the crew will continue working to fix the problem Monday. 

Golden Wok and Stomping Ground have reopened, and the area around the leak has been deemed safe.
